Chroma’s Terminology
Language is important.
Chroma Collective members recognize that institutions vary in the gender terminology they use. Members also acknowledge that differences in words and definitions can have the unintended result of dividing gender practitioners and detracting from the field’s ability to make progress. To enable effective collaboration within Chroma, members decided to focus on commonly agreed-upon concepts that underpin their institutions’ work in advancing equality. These terms and concepts were informed by a broader review of various gender-related definitions used by multilateral, bilateral, and philanthropic institutions. Within Chroma, therefore, members apply the following terms and concepts, understanding that this language can be revisited as need and interest arise.
